Ugly 3 Blooms, beauty is in the eye of the beholder

Animation, 07.23 seconds, 2023
Ugly 3, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, 2023.

This animation challenges social norms, celebrates differences and being a part of nature’s diversity, linking Spring to opening up and new growth.

Spring in full flower after the greyness of winter blazes with colour. A collection of bright Spring flowers shouts their message, calling for people to take fresh look at judgements and values that we and others place on ourselves, lifting us out of the darkness. Diverse in nature, shape, preferences and more, we echo the diversity of nature itself. Fresh, humorous, perhaps even absurd, I hope this invites people to freshen their outlook and lighten their load.

Heartbeat, hear the beat

Animation, 16.16 secs, 2023
This animation uses dots of soil, the last dead leaves of winter and the first magnolia blossoms heralding the spring. This is the cusp, the first signs of spring when nature quickens, that first sense of movement, new life, a new cycle. This inspired the idea of a beating heart, the idea that we can breathe again, the rhythm pulsing, speeding up, slowing down, excitement, calmness, stillness, anxiety, the breath and the heartbeat, the birth of new beginnings.

I studied at Kingston University and the Royal Academy, London. I have won national and international residencies including the Vermont Studio Center and Brush Creek Foundation for the Arts, Wyoming, USA. Awarded membership to the Royal British Society of Sculptors, I have shown my

work throughout the UK and abroad. Exhibitions include lakeside installations in Toledo, Spain and Laugarvatn, Iceland and exhibiting with the Stadtmuseum, Germany and Geumgang Nature Art Biennial, Korea. This year one of my goals is to focus on my photographic work, with some success. I am currently exhibiting photographs in Brazil, Bradford and online in Tbilisi, Georgia, testing the waters and reaching wider audiences.

I make site responsive installations exploring materials, light and space, often translating these works into photography, film and print. I use everyday materials with minimal intervention, keying into their surroundings, developing ideas and associations as the work progresses. My aim is to make what is already there more visible, at times capturing what we don’t normally see, light, wind, space, the potency of a colour. Illusions such as floating and evanescence occur in many of the pieces making links to the magical and to the metaphysical, the ecology and spirit of a place. I am inspired by the everyday, the ordinary, the basics that are also the fundamentals of life which once explored can uncover surprising aspects of our lives and humanity.
