La Corona

The work revolves around making a mockery of monarchy. On the right side, you see two cards of the Mexican game Lotería, the top one being “The Crown” and the bottom being “The Lady”. They mirror the direction and angle of the portrait, giving a hint of the identity of the person depicted in it.
All the elements seen in the surroundings, from the tapestry, the drapes, the peek into the other room, the frame of the portrait itself, scream luxury; an obnoxious taste in decoration. It sets a scene with an air of grandeur that speaks of the type of people who would attend a gathering in such a place.
Through out the piece, the mementos of the monarch in the portrait are treated with triviality. The adornment of what used to be her crown is now a tablecloth, a person sports her necklace on her own neck, the masked figure in the background wears her dress. A mannequin head with her likeness is toppled to the side amongst the jewels, staring towards the viewer, as nothing more than an extra decoration.
