the songbird, sugar, & space

By Ashlynn Doljac

you are a songbird

melodious

sweet solemn melody

sprinkled on the tongue of my mornings

you are two spoons of sugar instead of one

you are moonlight dancing across steady water in the dead of night

you are a clear water spring from the dark well

i hum you in my head

drink you in my tea

all of the sweet softness and delicate sunlight

turned my shambles into a mosaic

let my warped petals unfurl and revive again

i never picked the flowers because i was scared they would die on me

but picking you

lavish lilac amidst the brush

blossomed an  entire forest

you came with the roots intact

a seed sprouted an entire world of undergrowth

taught me what it was like to be grounded

find my feet and anchor down

still getting used to this idea of gravity

don't need to stand on the moon because

when i see you i am weightless
