Merino wool felt, cotton thread
20 x 11 x 14cm
2023
The seed pod vessel splits to issue a form of fine cotton thread expanding regularly but exponentially. Hyperbolic crochet creates a three dimensional structure which finds its expression in the non-Euclidian geometry of the natural world.
Jane Gibson
Jane Gibson uses alternative, traditionally feminine, drawing and crafting techniques including embroidery, crochet, felt making and photomontage to create textured and tactile surfaces. This drawing practice allows the artist to explore the body and its place in time through action, embedding it into the work itself, each stitch connecting medium, maker and moment.
With a focus on the maid, the mother and the crone archetypes as symbols of women's experience, Jane's work reflects on the cycles of time and nature tied to the bodies of women to celebrate and make visible key stages of female experience in a world which seeks to objectify, control and suppress them.
Jane Gibson is a Leeds-based paper and fibre artist whose practice explores the experience of time and of the cycles of women’s lives through process. Jane completed the Leeds Arts University Diploma in Visual Arts (DIVA) and Access to HE Diploma with distinction in the summer of 2020. Her final major project works were exhibited in the LAU summer exhibitions in 2019 (in person) and 2020 (online). She has since exhibited her work online and in person as well as working as a facilitating artist on projects with the British Library, Leeds City Museum and Leeds Playhouse.
Jane is a member of The Art Doctors, a West Yorkshire based artists' collective who playfully encourage participation in art and culture, and the role of creativity in wellbeing. She is also a member of the Diva Collective, a group of West Yorkshire based emerging artists working collaboratively in multidisciplinary practices.
